Wii Fit or Wii-tarded?

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

youtubeI just want to start this post by saying that I mean no insult towards people who have disabilities. It’s just a term I’ve heard that gave me a laugh because I’m politically incorrect like that.

After I dropped my gym membership because of the long term costs in comparison to getting an exercise machine for home, we saved up and bought my lovely elliptical. Unfortunately, it’s been a bit of a love/like relationship because I keep building myself up only to have something happen. Then I have to build myself up again.

That’s all fine and well, but now the husband wants to lose some weight. He’s spent all of fifteen minutes (that I know of) on the thing and I don’t see him getting enthused about more time on it.

As his self-appointed fitness cheerleader, I’ve been thinking about ways to help him get fit that he’ll actually be interested in. We go for lovely nature walks on the weekends, but once a week treks aren’t going to make a heck of lot of difference in his (or my) weight.

This is where the Wii comes in.

The prices in Australia have finally fallen enough for us to talk (very lightly) about getting a Wii and Wii Fit.

For me, I don’t think there will be too much of a problem. I’m a gamer at heart and this sounds like a lot of fun. Not to mention TV exercise time is a step up from even computer time.

Yes, I know, I should just go out for a walk, but I’m looking for something that my husband and I can do together that doesn’t involve wandering around in the cold at night.

(FYI: I’m in Australia, it’s winter, it gets fracking cold at night, plus hubsy just wants to be home after work most nights.)

Any Wii Fit fans out there? Is it fun? Would it be fun to do with my husband? Does it actually give you a workout? Is it worth the cost (keeping in mind we’d have to buy the Wii AND the Wii Fit)?

Mirror, Mirror

swimmingThank you all for your comments on the previous post about the picture. I didn’t know if I was just being silly or if anyone would understand why I would hesitate to look.

As I figured would happen, my husband was entirely too enthusiastic to let me get away without looking at it for long. If I had any weird feelings about it, I would have made him wait, but I figured it was time to look and get it over with.

“Gobsmacked” is the most fitting word for how I felt when I saw it.

I did have a bit of a chuckle later because my initial reaction was, “I look tall.” But, take the thickness out of my thighs and waist, and I do seem to look taller just because of the curves. Seeing my face thinner is nice, too, though my husband reckons they got the shape wrong and that I’ll have a heart-shaped face when I lose the weight.

Yes, Mr. JM was very enthusiastic. I joked with him about “my husband is having an affair with me”.

All in all, it’s quite weird (and a little depressing, comparing the current photo) but I think it’s a tool that is going to be an important part of things.

Am I impressed? Definitely! If you think it can help, then definitely give PictureYourselfThinner a go. I highly recommend it.

Is it going to be a motivation? Yes, I think so. I noticed a difference in my attitudes almost straightaway. The picture certainly isn’t a miracle pill or anything, but I think it will be a big help when I have copies on the fridge, on the elliptical, on my desk…

Interesting times.

Exercise Machines

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

I know I’ve been talking about how ‘it’s my last week at the gym’ for over a month and I haven’t actually stopped going there yet. Well, first it was because I needed to go through my contract or face a fine. Then it was the fact (that I didn’t know) that they needed 30 days warning if you were deciding to end your membership. So that combination of thing had me going there throughout this month.

I did give my final notice at the beginning of this month, though, so I’ll be well and truly off the membership. No, really!

And my credit card will thank me for it, that’s for sure.

But now I’m to the point where I need to buy some sort of exercise machine for home. I like walks fine enough, but I need something in the flat. I work from home, so having something right here that I can take regular exercise breaks on will work great.

I have my heart set on an elliptical because that was the gym machine that never failed to completely kick my arse whenever I got on it.

But I’m wondering what kind of machines (if any) that everyone else is using. Do you like it? Hate it? Wish you’d bought something else? Got it from someone else so you might as well use it?

I think I can afford a decent elliptical after a few months of saving (hopefully less than that because I don’t want to be away from machinery that long…

So what, if anything, do you use as your getting fit machine? Do you wish you could have something else or do you love what you have?

Weight Loss Miracle Pill

axe.jpgNo, I’m not talking about weight loss success stories, unfortunately. However, I have found a video you might have a good chuckle at because it sounds oh so familiar even for how it’s taken to extreme levels.

Okay, so maybe I’m a bit of a hypocrite for posting this given I am taking weight loss supplements, but I figured that if I can get a laugh out of this video, other people can as well.

Haven’t we all heard it thousands of times? Try this! You’ll lose weight instantly. The pounds will melt off. It’s the latest and greatest diet out there.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Something I read today really resounded to me because it makes so much sense. As we all know, 99 percent of these things plain don’t work. Or they don’t work in the long term if you are one of the lucky few to see some kind of result.

Why? To keep us spending money!

Just like any other companies, they’re all out to make a dollar. So why give people something that works when you can make a lot more money by keeping people coming back?

This is more of a ramble than a rant, but I am a bit peeved at all this. These companies know exactly what they are doing because it has worked for so many companies before. People are so addicted to the quick fix that the psychology of obesity simply doesn’t come into play.

Now that’s a thought – if a company started a psychological program, maybe more of us would get real help.

What do you think? Are you sick of all the ads or don’t you mind them? Do you wish there was more focus on the psychology of obesity?
